Frequently asked questions about the EASA Part 21 J – DOA course

1. Why a course on the Design Organisation Approval?

Any applicant for a type-certificate, STC, major change or major repair must demonstrate its capability to design (21.A.14), normally through a DOA. This course explains how a DOA is organised, how it works with EASA and what its privileges and obligations are.

2. Who is this course for?

Design engineers and CVEs, office of airworthiness and independent monitoring staff, quality and safety managers of design organisations, and staff of production, maintenance, CAMO and operators who work with a DOA.

3. How long does the course take?

About 3 hours. It includes 8 narrated videos with English subtitles, 10 PDF sheets, 8 practice quizzes and a final exam. You take it at your own pace.

4. What is the course based on?

Part 21 (Annex I to Regulation (EU) No 748/2012) and its AMC & GM as published in the EASA Easy Access Rules, including the management system requirements of Delegated Regulation (EU) 2022/201 and Part-IS (Delegated Regulation (EU) 2022/1645).

5. What score do I need to get the certificate?

You need at least 80% correct answers in the 20-question final exam (16 correct answers). You have two attempts.

6. How much does the course cost?

The course costs €85 (VAT included). The price includes access to the videos, PDF sheets, quizzes, final exam and digital certificate. To train a team, request a corporate quote.

7. Is the content up to date?

Yes. It covers the design management system of 21.A.239 (applicable since 7 March 2023), the 72-hour reporting rule of 21.A.3A, Part-IS (16 October 2025) and the current list of privileges of 21.A.263(c), points (1) to (9).

8. Does this course make me a CVE or head of design?

No. Nominated persons are accepted by EASA through the EASA Form 4, based on their qualifications and experience. This course gives you the regulatory knowledge expected in these roles and supports your DOA training records.

9. Can I take the course on a mobile or tablet?

Yes, the course works on computers, tablets and smartphones. You pick up where you left off.

10. Does the certificate expire?
